Women & Work

WIP Thesis Explorations—2021

EXCERPT FROM PROPOSAL
The work force was built to prioritize male needs, promote men into power positions, and, in turn, create a wage gap between the White man and the rest of the American workforce. Today, capitalism is used as a mask for persistent White supremacy where the privileged have an unearned advantage, and anyone who is “successful” must exist within the culture of domination (bell hooks).

Women are in a position to build a softer economy that goes further than empathy. In an effort to spark conversations regarding radical economic change in America, it is necessary to speculate such a future. The purpose of this project is not to solve the problems surrounding capitalism, but to use metaphor as a way to envision a different reality for women in this country.

QUESTIONS
  • How would American work culture operate if it was built to serve women and the cyclical nature of their bodies?
  • How could feminine mythologies inform environments and menial objects in a reimagined work environment? How can they inform power structures and hierarchies?
  • In the speculative world where a new work culture is built, what must White women be prepared to give up in order to make it a reality?
