Joan of Arc
Card Set—2019

BRIEF
Design a set of cards featuring a hero or a villain that will exisit as a surrealist game of analogy—each card representing an answer to the game.

APPROACH
I designed my cards around Joan of Arc. There are three levels of hierarchy to the answer, the item being represented, the analogy for that item, and then the specific analogy related to Joan of Arc. Image: animal—fawn in headlights. Hair: a color—gold leaf. Height: a vegetable—corn with husk.

They are treated to look like a bible when packed into the slip case. When brought out they resemble tarot cards or prayer cards. I collaged each card by hand to give a tactile feel to the compositions. This approach also allowed me to bring in various imagery and references that enhanced the analogies.

WHAT I LEARNED
Designing by hand until the final touches taught me patience and delicacy.
